Victoria, daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and Victoria Maria
Louisa of Saxe-Coburg was born on 24th May 1819. She became queen
in 1837 at the age of eighteen following the death of her uncle
William IV.
Victoria reigned for 63 years until her death on 22nd January
1901. Her reign saw many political and social changes as well as
the expansion of the British Empire which doubled in size, taking
in Australia, Canada, India and parts of Africa and the South
Pacific.
Victoria married her first cousin Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha
in 1840. The couple had a family of nine children, many of whom
married into European monarchy.
